Excursion to Vladimir & Suzdal* Vladimir is situated 200 km north-east of Moscow on the left bank of the Klyazma-river. According to the chronicles, Prince Vladimir Monomakh founded the city in 1108 and named it after himself. The places of the most interest in Vladimir are the 12th century cathedrals of Assumption and St. Demetrius and the Golden Gates Museum, depicting the ancient town’s walls and fortifies. Suzdal is a small town 30 km to the north of Vladimir. Situated on the Kamenka-river, Suzdal dates back to the year 1024. It seems like the whole town consists of churches and cathedrals, each one surpassing the other in beauty and splendor. The Kremlin, fortified with earthen walls traces of which still remain, dominates the downtown area.
